Synthroid is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the thyroid. It is important for normal energy and metabolism. For a variety of reasons, the body may not produce enough of this hormone on its own. In these cases, Synthroid is taken to replace the body's natural thyroid hormone.

Take Synthroid exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Take this medication at the same time each day whenever possible. Thyroid hormone is usually taken in the morning to prevent insomnia at night. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you.

This drug may cause following serious side effects : an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives), vomiting, or chest pain, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Synthroid and talk to your doctor or try another similar medication if you experience tremor, nervousness, or irritability, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, changes in appetite, or weight loss, leg cramps, menstrual irregularities, or fever, sweating, or heat sensitivity.

Tell your doctor your medical history especially : if you have a heart disease such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, or angina. Synthroid should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Do not change brands or change to a generic Synthroid drug product without first talking to your doctor. Some Synthroid products may not be interchangeable.

Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you are using, especially : antacids that contain aluminum, the prescription ulcer medicine sucralfate (Carafate), the cholesterol-lowering drugs cholestyramine. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Synthroid.

Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include chest pain, nervousness, trouble sleeping, tremor, rapid heartbeat, nausea, headache, fever, sweating, shortness of breath, heat intolerance, irregular menses, increased appetite, decreased weight, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Do not share this medication with others.

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered, do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
